It’s a common belief that exercise is the answer to all of our health worries and woes. However, not all problems can be solved with physical activity, especially for gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia, an enlargement of male breast tissue due to excess fat or glandular buildup beneath the nipple area, cannot be cured through exercising. Only gynecomastia surgery will remove the fibrous glandular tissue and make the area more proportionate with the surrounding chest muscles.

If you’ve ever found yourself in despair while doing bench presses, wondering why your man boobs aren’t reducing no matter how much you sweat, take comfort in knowing that you are not alone!

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition where a male’s chest area takes on a more feminine shape due to the enlargement of glandular tissue in the breasts. The condition affects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men and is caused by an imbalance between estrogen and testosterone hormones.

Though its cause may vary, common causes include puberty and certain medical conditions such as thyroid disorders or breast cancer. Symptoms include tenderness in the chest area as well as swelling around one or both nipples.

Why Exercise Alone Won’t Help Gynecomastia?

Though exercise has been known to reduce fat throughout the body, it won’t make gynecomastia go away because it cannot shrink the glands in your chest area. This is responsible for producing estrogen and causing gynecomastia in males.

While exercise can help tone up muscles around these glands, they will remain enlarged unless removed through gynecomastia surgery at the Solomon Cosmetic Center.

Can Exercise Help with the Appearance of Gynecomastia?

While it does not take it away, you can still use exercise to help improve your appearance if you suffer from this condition. Exercise helps build muscle mass around the breast area, which can help hide any excess fatty tissue in the chest region caused by gynecomastia.

Regular exercise also helps maintain general health throughout our bodies. It is improving posture and overall confidence when interacting with others socially and professionally.
