Thigh lift or Thighplasty
WHAT IS A THIGH LIFT?
A thigh lift, is a cosmetic surgical procedure to lift, tighten skin and improve the appearance of the thighs due to excess skin which occur often after a massive weight loss, pregnancy or loss of fat or collagen due to aging.
HOW IS THIGH LIFT PERFORMED?
Every patient is different. It Depends on the amount of skin that need to be resected and which direction. The most common procedure performed is the medial thigh lift. All procedures are done with tumescent anesthesia where a tumescent fluid containing Lidocaine and epinephrine to constrict the vessels is injected into the area. Liposuction is then performed to contour irregularities then the area is marked again for maximum resection of skin. The skin is excised, and absorbable stitches is placed to minimize scarring. The procedure can be done under local anesthesia with IV sedation which makes recovery faster and minimal down time.
WHAT IS RECOVERY LIKE?
After the procedure, you will need to wear a compression garment for 2 weeks. There might be some swelling and soreness in the area, but the compression garment help keep the swelling down. We may insert a drain tube to collect the tumescent fluids and we only keep it for a few days. Sometimes we just leave small opening below for the fluids to exit out. If you have a drain tube, you will need to keep track of the fluid in the bulb and record it to give to the doctor on your follow up appointment.
You should be able to return to work within 7 to 10 days and resume physical activity after 4 to 6 weeks. While there are scars, they are mostly hidden in your body’s natural creases, and they will fade over time. It may take up to a year for the scar to fade. It is advisable to use some silicone sheets or scar gel for the scar to heal well.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS FOR THE THIGH LIFT?
Like any other surgical procedure, the risks include but not limited to bleeding, infection, bruising, wound dehiscence, asymmetry, numbness, unsightly scar, raised scar, keloids, hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation.
